Trip to Gallipoli

I went on a field trip to the battle fields of Gallipoli. Here is the route we took. We left Mustafakamelpasa in the morning and drove to Lapsekj where we crossed on the ferry. We then drove down the peninsula to the battle grounds and at the end of the day crossed back to the mainland at Canakkale.
The Gallipoli Campaign, also known as the Dardanelles Campaign or the Battle of Gallipoli took place at the peninsula of Gallipoli in the (in modern day Turkey) between 25 April 1915 and 9 January 1916, during the First World War.

The ferry at Lapsekj.

Landing at Gelibolu.

The first stop in Gallipoli was the welcome center with a large map of the battle fields.

A fortification on the beach.

I climbed up to see what was inside.

A cemetery

This is the beach where the British and Australians landed. The water was very clear and and nice.

We then drove up to the heights where the Turkish army was located.

The Turkish soldiers had trenches to keep the British from getting off the beach.

A view of the beached from the trenches. What a commanding position.

The channel is called "The Sea Of Marmara". The ship is going up to Istanbul.

This is an Ottoman fort in Eceabat.

Doug climbed up to the top of the wall and walked around the fort.

Then it was time for dinner.

Raki is the national drink in Turkey. It tastes like liquorish and is mixed with chilled water.

We had calamari for an appetiser.

Then fish for dinner.

On the ferry to Canakkale and back to the hotel.
