Container Gardens.

Boy is it hot.
Early on the hottest day of the year (so far) we were out planting the container gardens. Kazin and YiYu don't like all the activity in 'their' garden.
With all the rain and now the hot weather, we are getting some very beautiful flowers in the garden. Kathleen also got one of her orchids to bloom again.

Friday Adventure, 22 May 2006

We were off again in search of Minnesota Wineries. This trip we saw three (only saved pictures of two) The first was the St. Croix Winery where we picked apples last fall<http://fred-hemker.blogspot.com/2005/10/first-week-in-october.html>, then Northern Vineyards in Stillwater, and last to WineHaven near Taylor Falls. We stopped at Cesare's Wine Bar again because we forgot it doesn't open till 5:00 PM.

We had a light lunch at the park in Osceola on the St Croix River, even though the water was cold, some kids were swimming, then it was off to our favorite stop, the Sculpure Park. This year they had a giant metal man on display and were building a house out of cut-up 5 gallon buckets. Fred was very interested in the technique because our house needs shingles.

A May Visit With Friends

Grace and Alicia were in Minneapolis on business and were able to take time to stop at our house for dinner. Shown are Fred, Alicia, Grace, and Kathleen. We had a very enjoyable dinner and conversation.

Hostess gifts (a bottle of wine was also included but not shown)

Spring Plantings

We have gotten the spring plantings done. The flowers are doing very well. Our next job will be planting the garden.

Kathleen and Kate planting the vegetables for the big garden and some hanging baskets of herbs. http://fred-hemker.blogspot.com/2005/05/kate-just-looked-on-with-that-superior.html

Walter's hostas from Great Grandma's house are in the upper left and Alicia's Day Lily opposite. Lower pictures are of the Tiger Lilies in the garden and the Honeysuckle on the fence. With all the rain we have gotten this spring everything is doing very well.

From upper left clockwise, a new addition to the Trillium, Kathleen's Fern Leaf Peony, the Clementis in the front of the house (a long story but we call him Lazarus), and The Garden Angel looking after everyone. .

Mother's Day Walk for the Cure #4

This is the fourth time we have walked for the cure with our friends Ed and Alicia. Last year the weather was much better as you can see from last year's pictures. http://fred-hemker.blogspot.com/2005/05/hemkers.html
Kathleen and Alicia

Starting the walk.

People on the walk.

Some group photos. Fritz flew in from California to walk with us. It was his first walk. Kate made lunch reservations at a restaurant in the Mall of America (MOA). It was the Nappa Valley. It allowed us to avoid the 56,000 people trying to leave at the same time.

By the end of the day the weather had cleared up a bit.

Rainy Day Rhubarb Pie

This weekend we made a Mother's Day Rhubarb Pie. Kathleen picked, cleaned and prepared the Rhubarb. Kate and Fred made the pie crust and baked it. Very good once a year.

Our plant is doing very well.

Phyllis, Corrine, and Bonnie Visit Continued

We enjoyed their visit very much. Phyllis was a pleasure to have around. The weather was good throughout the visit and we had an excellent time.
Well, most of us did. I cannot speak for the animals who had their routine disrupted.
Phyllis and Corrine and Bonnie made us a cover for Kathleen's trunk. We will use it at the end of our bed to put the bedspread on. It was a very difficult project but Corrine got it done. Corrine told us a story about how when she was dating she would start making an outfit on Friday night to wear Saturday night. that kind of skill is a joy to see.
Kathleen's Fern Leaf Peonys
Fred's apple trees and his Michigan Trillium.
